World news diary, September 2023.

WELCOME TO OUR GENERAL BLOG YOU ARE INVITED. Here, we will post articles about world issues, Australian issues, Italian issues. And we will post also my personal life story articles.

Today these things should not happen, so, I wonder why the people that have perished were not warned in time, about 900 buildings were completely destroyed, and where there were houses, now there is nothing left, and many people have died. We can only feel sorry for them.

Welcome to our article, World News Diary, September 2023..

Now, this article is a few months old, but I am reposting it in blogger to keep my diary going. Anyhow, this month of September has started with lots of bad news, for the African continent. There are at least three things that are happening, all at the same time. Here we are talking about, the earthquake in Morocco, the floods in Libya and the refugees that want to migrate to Europe, and there are thousands of them. Hereunder is how this news were reported on the internet (and I quote)

Morocco earthquake kills more than 2,000 people, survivors sleep outdoors.

·         With homes destroyed, villagers prepare for night outside

·         Quake damages historic buildings in Marrakech old city

·         WHO says more than 300,000 people affected in quake zone

·         People flee houses in Casablanca, Rabat, elsewhere

·         Deadliest Morocco quake since 1960, USGS records show

AMIZMIZ, Morocco, Sept 9 (Reuters) - Moroccan earthquake survivors huddled for a night in the open on the High Atlas Mountains on Saturday, a day after the country's deadliest quake in more than six decades killed more than 2,000 people and laid waste to villages.

Neighbours were still searching for survivors buried on the slopes, where houses of mud brick, stone and rough wood were cracked open and mosque minarets toppled by the quake that struck late on Friday. The historic old city of Marrakech also suffered extensive damage.

Here I must say that it seems strange to me, that only some countries are allowed to help them, and I wonder why.

------------------------

Now let us talk about the Libya floods.

Here I quote what I found on the internet news.

One week on from the devastating floods in Libya, more than 10,000 people are still missing in the port city of Derna as aid agencies warn of a humanitarian crisis for remaining residents.

Almost 900 buildings in the city were completely destroyed and lives were torn apart by nature's power, as well as human failings.

Devastated residents, 30,000 of whom are now homeless in Derna alone are in desperate need of clean water, food, shelter and basic supplies amid a growing risk of cholera, diarrhoea, dehydration and malnutrition.

The death toll from the devastating floods in Derna remains unclear with the figure rising to at least 11,300 while a further 10,000 remain missing.

Derna Mayor Abdel-Moneim al-Ghaithi has warned that the death tally could climb to 20,000 given the number of neighbourhoods that have been washed away. (End of quotes)

Now this is not all, because there are the African emigrants, that want to go to Europe at all costs, to talk about hereunder.

--------------------------

The African emigrant problem.

As if what has been happening in Africa is not enough trouble, there are also bad news about the migrant boats. See hereunder this report that I found on the internet, and I quote.

Italy struggles to deal with migrant boats following a surge in arrivals.

Facilities on the Italian island of Lampedusa are being overrun by thousands of migrants who have arrived by boat in recent weeks.

It comes as Tanzanian authorities have arrested hundreds of migrants and people smugglers as they attempt to make their way to Europe.

Lampedusa has recently become the brunt of crossing from Tunisia and is not the main migrant smuggling base, replacing Libya.

Nearly 126,000 migrants have been reported to have arrived in Italy this year, almost doubling the figure in 2022.

Migrants have had to be transferred to relieve the overstretched refugee centre, which has a normal capacity of around 400.

Italian PM warns migration an issue for all of Europe on Lampedusa visit.

Story by Angela Giuffrida in Lampedusa and Lisa O'Carroll in Brussels •7h

Italy’s prime minister has said that European countries must work together “to stop departures [from Africa]” and swiftly deport those turned down for asylum, who she said, “threaten the future of Europe”, after thousands of people seeking refuge arrived on Lampedusa in the last week.

Giorgia Meloni toured the tiny Sicilian Island, which for years has been the first port of call for people making the treacherous journey by sea from north Africa, on Sunday morning alongside Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission.

The three-hour visit, which included a stop-off at an overcrowded reception centre and a site near the port that contains the remains of flimsy boats used by migrants, came after almost 8,500 people landed within three days last week – more than the island’s population of 6,000. (End of quote)

I believe that the Italian PM Giorgia Meloni is right, they need to stop these unwanted emigrants, because they are just too many, and there will be more problems, if they do not succeed in stopping them.

What I can add here is this. Most times these emigrants do not seem poor at all, they dress well and are healthy and well fed. So, they leave their native land to go in search of a better life, that perhaps is only a dream and does not exist, but try to tell them that?

The electric vehicle problem.

A Tesla Model S caught fire while plugged-in at a Supercharger in Norway, and almost completely burned down to nothing. The event happened at 14.30 Friday afternoon (local time) at a Tesla fast-charging station in Gjerstad, Norway

Today we are told to buy electric vehicles, because that will be good for the environment, since they do not emit any carbon that affects global warming. Okay, we believe they are cleaner vehicles for that reason. But we do not really know what other problems they can cause in the future, see what I found on the internet. (And I quote.)

Electric vehicles.

Sky News host James Macpherson says electric vehicle fires burn so hot that it takes firefighters “forever” to put them out.

There are numerous reports of electric vehicles catching fire, with a growing trend of occurrences.

“It releases toxic chemicals that go into the skin and there’s no PPE gear that can protect firefighters from that,” Mr Macpherson said.

“There was some advice issued this week that if your EV is involved in an accident, you need to park it at least 15 metres away from any other vehicles because the fire might not be immediate.

“Weeks later the battery could suddenly catch fire.

“This is a massive problem with EVs.” (End of quote)

Just as I thought, we don’t know enough about the future problem that can arise from these electric cars. I am sure that the batteries and fires are the biggest problem.

Here I want to make this observation, most of us believe that we can solve the energy problem by going electric, but whatever we do there will be problems. For instance, what we do with all the electric batteries when they are old, can they be recycled? This also applies to the wind turbine and the solar panels, we need to know, if it is easy enough to recycle them, because while we may solve one problem, we may create another. So, here I wonder if the experts have worked this out. Hereunder is a link to battery fires.

Anyhow, now let look at other problems that we may have in life.

-------------------------------

Australia housing problems

There are two things that we need in life to survive, we need food, and we need a roof over our head. This sounds simple enough, but not everybody can achieve that during their lives, and this is when the government can help if they make the right policies.

Anyhow, today we have this housing shortage, and it is hard to find houses or units for rent, at the same time the rent is going up and most people blame the landlords, as if it is the landlords that have caused this rental shortage. People do not understand that the landlords run a business, and every business needs to make money to exist, if there is not enough money in it, then that business will slowly run down end even cease to exist.

So, is would be better if the people and the authorities in charge, try to be more friendly with the landlords and try to find a solution that helps everybody. Otherwise, the few landlords left will slowly disappear, and everybody will be worse off. I hope I have explained it clear enough.

Now let me explain, the reason why there are not enough properties for rent, it is because there is not enough money in renting. One of the reasons, it is because today houses are very expensive to buy, then the authorities in charge are charging high levies to keep a property running, so, most landlords are forced to sell, because it is not worth having rental properties anymore.

So, I dare to suggest that the government gives more rent assistance to the low-income earner and find a way how to keep those levies lower. This is all I can say for the moment. see you next time.
