Goodbye Italy my native country.

WELCOME TO MENFRANCO GENERAL BLOG. Here, we will be posting posts about world issues,Australian issues, Italian issues, and my personal life story articles. Anyhow, today we will talk about, when I became an emigrant and left Italy to come to Australia in, Goodbye to my country.

Italy is my native country, but I migrated to Australia when I was young, because I was working in the farm and I did not earn much. So, it was a waste of time to continue farming our small family farm, for this reason I migrated to Australia, and this is the story that I am writing now.

Welcome to our article, Goodbye to my country

Dear readers, in this blog, I am going back to when I left Italy to emigrate to Australia; in those times in Italy things were different from today, so, I had to say, ‘Goodbye to my country’ and go somewhere else to earn a living. Today they are better off in Italy, even if they have some problem to solve.  Anyhow , let us begin to tell you my life story, and while I am doing that, I will compare a few things that have changed.

Anyhow, during our life we must make decisions, because of what is happening around us, one of these decisions I had to make when I was young and decided to migrate to Australia. Here we need to say that to migrate from one country to another was a very serious decision, so, one had to make sure that one really needed to move from where you were. This was not easy to do, because the generations before us stayed all their life in the towns were they were born, only a few ventured to migrate, because moving from one country to another was dangerous and also took a very long time, so, for me and for all those that wanted to migrate was not an easy decision to make, but in the end everyone has to make his own decisions, so, after thinking it over, I decided to migrate to Australia, since my brother was already in Australia and he said that it was good. So, I said goodbye to my country and migrated to Australia.

Today to understand the reasons why I migrated to Australia in the sixties, you need at least read this article that I have written in Hub Pages, Farming today compared to the old way, where you can compare the ways of living.

Anyhow, today the same decision is easier to make, because people move from one country to another easily; but it was not so a while ago. In fact, if we go back a hundred years or so, most people used to live in their own native town all their lives, and a few of them never even saw another town even when they were close bye, then life was very different and people accepted that they would die in the same town that they were born. Today life is different, and we find it easier to move from one town to another and from one country to another and this is what I have done in my lifetime, I moved from Italy to Australia.

Here I want to explain my position, there are times in our lives when we have to say goodbye to the dearest things in our lives and move to another country. When people move to another country it has become necessary for them to do so, to find a better life in the future. For this reason, I decided to leave my family farm in Italy to migrate to Australia.

Now, to explain why, I am writing about my last year working in the farm, and then when I had to leave the farm, first to go in the army to serve my country and then leaving Italy to come to Australia, and also my voyage in a ship called the Sydney that in those times was taking passengers to Australia, I will be telling you what impression Australia made on me when I arrived. I am going to be brief about all this. So, now let me explain my position why I left Italy.

--------------------------------------------

Explaining my position

Let me explain, to understand the reasons of leaving Genzano di Lucania my native town and not wanting to return to work in the farm is this: there were many issues and most of all was that it was very hard to earn a living in the farms, even when we had average harvests; and then, the ways of working in the farms was changing and there was less need of man hours work, because the tractor and other machines were coming in, so, either we had to buy these machines or we had to move out of farming, for us to buy those machines was out of reach, as our farm was not big enough; and the last year that I worked in the farm we had a very poor harvest, in fact we made so little wheat that it could not cover the cost of buying the seeds we had sown.

All these facts put together made me see that I was wasting my time to work in the farms as my forbears had done for hundreds of years before me, so, I took the opportunity to migrate to Australia.

But before I could migrate to Australia I was called to serve in the army, you see in Italy all able males over 21 must serve in the army, so, I went to serve in the army as prescribed by the Italian laws. I served in the army and when the army let me go, I migrated to Australia.

-----------------------------------------

 Leaving Italy for Australia.

Goodbye Italy, I am leaving for Australia.

I remember that my mother with a friend came with me to Naples to farewell me when I left Italy. I suppose it was hard for my mother to let me go away from the family farm, but it had to be done, because we had debits we owed too much money, so, we the young and strong members of the family had to find a way how to pay our debits. Anyhow, one of the options was to migrate make enough money to pay our debits and then return home to live a better life. Well at least that was as my mother wanted it to be, but it did not work that way for us for many reasons. Anyhow it was the year 1961 when I left Italy and embarked on the ship Sydney for Australia. I have to say that when you leave a place that you know well for a place where you have never been it seems an adventure, starting with walking up to the ship deck for the first time and looking at all those things that you have never seen before.

In those times voyages took a long time, like going to Australia would worry people, so, old folks like my mother was worried, because the voyage from Italy to Australia would take one month by ship and in those times it was the only way available to go to Australia.

Anyhow, we are in Naples with my mother and her friend, who had a couple of sons in Australia already, we went on the ship and after visiting the ship, my mother and her fried went back on the dock, they stayed on the dock waiting to say goodbye. Anyhow, I embarked on the ship and this ship is going to take me to Australia a faraway land, I wonder how it is going to turn out, because I have never been to sea before, I also cannot swim and this worries me a bit but not so much, because I know that most of the other passengers cannot swim as well, so, we are all in the same boat, so to speak and also in reality, because we are all in the same ship. Anyhow, I am on this ship liner Called the Sydney and the ship is about to depart from Naples; the ship makes this low strange sound a couple of times and we see that it is slowly moving away from the sore. We all look for our relatives and friends and wave goodbye until they become so small in the distance that we could not recognize them.

And after that many thoughts came to our minds and we were saying within ourselves; goodbye mother, Goodbye my friends, goodbye Italy, goodbye Genzano my native town, who knows when I will see you again; and thus, the journey begins to unfold. We left Naples in the late afternoon, and next morning we were docked in Messina. While we were docked in Messina we were allowed to come ashore and walk around if we wanted to, of course as I was a young man I wanted to see as much as I could, so I walked the streets of Messina, which seemed to me a nice clean Sicilian town. Then we went back to the ship as we were told and we left Italy for good; Goodbye Italy, who knows when I will see you again?

------------------------------------------------

The real journey begins.

The real journey outside Italy begins

Next evening, we were in Port Said Egypt. Here again we were allowed to go ashore, and here for the first time we met with real foreigners who talked a different language, you see, until then I and a lot of the other passengers who were also migrating to Australia had never been outside Italy. In Port Said I saw for the first time that the people of this world are not all the same, in fact I am going to describe to you the way as I have seen it at that time. We came down the ship and we were walking by instinct in small groups, or it was one of the ship crew that took a group to show us the way, and to see how things were done down there.

There were a few very young and poor people that wanted to shine your shoes for a small coin, there were others that would sell you anything, in fact they sold to a few of us a piece of well reaped wood for a piece of chocolate, there were a few shops open that you could buy a bargain if you knew how to bargain, because they would ask a high price and who knew how to bargain could reduce that price to one third of the original price, or something like that.

On reflection today I would say that Egypt was a strange place, you see the people that we talked to, knew a bit of Italian and they would tell us that we were robbing them by calling us (mariul or mariooo) which in the dialect of southern Italy can be translated as robber or thief; but while they were telling us that we were bobbing them, they were indeed robbing us, right, left and center. But today I understand what they were doing, they were just trying to live their life, they were so poor that what they were doing was the only way for them to survive, may God forgive them if they hurt us by robbing some of us bad.

The Suez Chanel is a man made channel between the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea. It also divides the continent of Africa to the continent of Asia.

-------------------------

Anyhow, then we went back to the ship and next day we were navigating in the Suez Chanel, the Suez Channel offer one of the most strange sights, because, while you are in a ship in this man made channel that mankind should be proud to have made, and while you are in this strip of water slowly navigating towards the Red See, on both sides is desert land, what a sight this is?

After navigating the Suez Channel, we went through the Red Sea and next stop was the port of Aden Yemen. By now I and the others were aware that here things would be different from the normal way, but anyhow there was not much to see or report. Because I did not venture too far away from the port, what I can remember of Aden is that there were a few shops near the port, but what I remember most is that the air seemed to have a strange smell like sulphur that day, so, even today I wonder why it was so, and also, does the air in Aden smell like that all the time? If that is so, then different lands have different smells. I wonder if somebody else has had the same experience as I have.

Then the time came when we left Aden to go straight to Australia, this time it would take about a fortnight navigating no stop the Indian Ocean, a fortnight in the middle of the sea with no land in sight, this was going to be another hard take for the people that had never been to sea like myself, but anyhow we had taken that decision to go to Australia, so, let us go and see what Australia is like.

When we left Aden I had already set foot on three continents during my life, so, within my heart I was saying goodbye to them all, starting from my native town of Genzano di Lucania, Goodbye Genzano my native town, goodbye Italy my country of origin, goodbye Port Said Egypt Africa, with your poor people that try to rob all passenger that set foot on their land just to survive, and goodbye Aden Yemen Asia with you strange air smelling of sulphur. Next stop will be Australia that very far away land, which we all think it would be like the Promised Land.

------------------------------------------

Navigating the Indian Ocean.

Navigating the Indian Ocean from Aden to Fremantle Australia, took us a fortnight; I should say that it was all right considering the circumstances that most of us had never been at sea before. You see, in those days’ people traveled by ship or any other kind of transport only when it was necessary, and even though the ship was not a luxury cruiser like the cruisers of today it was good enough for us who were passengers who wanted to move from Italy to Australia. The ship had embarked over 2000 passengers and we all had a proper bed to sleep in, there was plenty of good wholesome food and meals that were served regularly, we all had a place to sit at the tables, which were attached to the floor, but if the ship moved too much we had to mind the dishes and the drinks. Anyhow, at other times we would go around the ship with some of these acquaintances that we have met on the ship, or just sit in our own cabin. We had also an English class that we could attend, so, we could learn a few words of English and be able to say at least the most Basic English words, in the hope that we could say something and make other people understand what we needed when we reached Australia. There was something else that we learned at these English classes and it was the convict song I believe and it went thus: Oh my darling, oh my darling, oh my darling Clementine, you are lost and gone forever, oh my darling Clementine. How appropriate it was in our cases.

An old man views of the world.

WELCOME TO MENFRANCO GENERAL BLOG. Here, we will be posting posts about world issues,Australian issues, Italian issues, and my personal life story articles. Anyhow, today we will talk about, An old man views of the world.

We old people are supposed to know most things, and we are supposed to guide the future generations the right way, but today it is not that easy, because things are changing. Anyhow, there are times when we have to be a fatherly figure, and keep the young people interested in our story, but there are times, when we have to assume a more serious role, and tell the world what we can see happening tomorrow.

Welcome to our article,  An old man view of the world

We old people are concerned about what can happen in the world tomorrow, because we have seen nasty things happen during our lives; therefore, we are looking for signs that can tell us what can happen next. People must understand that we old people do this, because we our own lives have taught us to be alert, to prevent nasty things happening to us.

You see, old people are concerned for themselves, and other people as well. So, in my views as an old man, I am looking at the world today, and I don’t like what I see; because what I see is uncertainty all around us. So, I think that the world is going mad these days; I feel that humanity that was supposed to know better in the 21st century, it is not doing what they are supposed to do.

Some of us think that we have reached the age of reason, but from what happens, I am sure that we have not reached the age of reason; because the age of reason is when people don’t make mistakes, and they have learned how to live peacefully, with the people around them.

So, what is wrong with humanity I would like to ask? You see, today when we look at the news, it is impossible to avoid seeing the violent things that are happening in the world. What hurts most is that humanity is doing this to themselves, as if they don’t know better.

When I wrote this article the first time, the bad news is the terrorist that seem to happen very often. So, I have to say that as a human being my heart is crying, because there are terrible things going on in the world; so, I believe that we must do something to stop this violence; if we cannot do anything that can help, we need at least talk about it, in the hope of finding a way out. Who knows somebody can come up with a solution?

Anyhow, I am concerned what is happening in the entire world, I am concerned about this peaceful country of Australia, because it may not be peaceful anymore, since we cannot avoid to be involved, and I am also concerned about my native country Italy, because Italy is in the front line, you see, there are thousands of illegal emigrants arriving to Italy continually.

I know for a fact that in Italy there have been many wars in the past, as it has a long history about them, so, I fear that something can happen again. You see, today there are a lot of refugees coming in. This might not seem important to some people, but, the views of this old man are that, they seem to occupy the whole country and the Italians are welcoming them, even when a lot of other Italians are concerned.

Anyhow, I don’t see that this peaceful welcoming is going to last long, because most regions of Italy are not rich, so, they cannot sustain all these illegal emigrants; therefore, if this refugee’s problem that we are witnessing today keeps going on, there can be another violent story that can unfold in the future in these regions of Southern Italy, therefore, we wonder, if history is going to repeat itself, so, we are concerned.

--------------------------------------

Today exodus in the Mediterranean Sea, are refugees from Africa and the Middle East that move to Europe, because there are wars going on they leave their land, but there are also people that go in search of a better life. So, we should be concerned what could happen over there.

Why we should be concerned

We should be concerned, because there is this movement of people that can be considered a Biblical Exodus. You know what I mean, the Jews left Egypt to go to their Promised Land, in their way they had many problems, one of their biggest problems was that they had to fight the people that were occupying their Promised Land, so, in the process many people were killed. Now that is one example of what happens when a large number of people move from one place to another; of course, there are many more examples, but I believe that I have explained my point of view.

If you follow my main point of view, we can say that today we need to be concerned about what is happening; because what has happened in the past can happen again, therefore, we must treat this refugee problem with caution. Because history tells us to be concerned. Not only in Southern Italy, that happen to be in the front line, but also in the entire continent of Europe, as there are too many refugees that arrive from Africa, the Middle East and Asia, so, I am concerned.

Now, to understand what I am worried about, it is necessary to know more about this region of Southern Italy and the inhabitant that are living there. You see this region is not rich, the only thing that it is going on there is wheat farming, for those people that own enough land to do that, there is also some mixed farming going on for their own use; there are a lot of small farms that can sustain the native inhabitant only. We have also to say that there are times when these small farms do not produce enough and people must leave the farms and go to work somewhere else, even if they have to go to another country. You see this is the main reason why I left our small family farm in Southern Italy and migrated to Australia.

But as we have said, this can apply to several other regions of Italy and indeed the entire world. We really have to think about what we need to do next, so, whatever concerns I have for my native town of southern Italy and the entire country of Italy, they are also concerns for the rest of the word and above all the western world, since that is the place where these refugees are moving to.

Now, these refugees believe that they are the only people that have got problems, but even in Italy there are unsolved problems, which I am going to point out here-under, just to explain my views. You see, Italy is over populated already, if we compare the resources and capacity that Italy has, and that is one of the main problems over there.

-----------------------------------

Italy position and population

The Italian peninsula in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, this makes it easy for the refugees to come to Europe. We believe that this is the main reason why so many illegal emigrants arrive in Italy every day, and sometime even thousands of them can come in just one day, other times just a few, but it is a problem that may never end, unless we of the western wold are able to find a solution. Any solution can help, but the best is that we must find a way how to keep these refugees in their own countries of origin.

We know that it is not easy, because if that was the solution, it should have taken place by now, but I believe that we must continue to see if the refugees can be kept in their original land. We know that this is almost impossible, therefore, we are concerned about it, since it brings lots of other problems.

We have reasons to believe that Italy cannot cope with this incoming of refugees for long, so, something may happen that will show us this weakness. What is happening now is this, Italy accept these refugees on humanitarian grounds, they even go to help them when they get in trouble in their boats on their way to Italy, but there are too many of them arriving every day; so, it is a never ending problem. Most of the western world is worried about these refugees; but we don’t know what to do to stop them.

Let me point out this to you briefly, since I have written the first part of this article, there have been several terrorist attacks that involves illegal emigrants and refugees, but that is not all; for instance, today on the Italian news, we have seen the eternal city of Rome full of uncollected rubbish in the streets. This is another problem that the refugees will produce, since there are more people, there will be more rubbish. Now the rubbish can be collected, but where to take this rubbish will be the problem of the future.

Today I am editing this article, so, I can add other things that have happened since last time I wrote this article. There has been an earthquake in central Italy, where near three hundred people have died. At the same time, in a few days about 15 thousand refugees have arrived in Italy. It is very warring, therefore, I feel sad for the Italian people, since they have to cope with this other disaster. So, in the world there are more problems to solve every day.

The Italian peninsula in the Mediterranean Sea, including Sicily and other small islands come very close to the African continent, this is one of the reasons why illegal emigrants use Italy to go to the continent of Europe.

The Italian problem of today.

At the beginning of this article, we have talked about that there are many illegal migrants in the world today; they are illegal migrant because they forcefully go everywhere, even when they are not wanted. So, I must say that when they do this forceful migrating, they can upset the way of life of the people that are forced to receive them against their will.

The causes of this illegal migration, it is that these refugees are in search of a better life, there are many reasons for that, but above all it is poverty. When poverty is bad people can even starve to death, now that is when people are very poor and they are forced to find a way how they can feed themselves; here the rest of the world that are better off should help them and there is no question about it.

But on the other hand, there are people that are not that poor, they want more because they are greedy, they want to believe that the rest of the world is better off than they are, therefore, they want to grab whatever the others have, and this is the main problem that the entire world is facing today.

Anyhow, here we want to talk about the Italian problem, mainly because I am an Italian that has emigrated from southern Italy; therefore, in this article I want to talk about Italy and my native town, but who are these emigrants we must ask and why they are migrating?

This is the main thing that worries me. These people that are arriving as refugees in Italy and Europe, they look like that they can feed themselves well, in their own country. So, feeding themselves is not the problem for these people. Therefore, what other problems they might have one should ask?

Before we can answer that question, we want to define the sort of refugees we are talking about here. There are at least two types of refugees, the real refugees are those people that are forced to run away from a natural disaster or war. The rest of them are not real refugees, they are illegal emigrants that are looking for opportunities to live a better life.

Now, there is nothing wrong for people wanting to live a better life, if the better life they are looking for is hard work, and this hard work is available in the country they emigrate, but if they are looking for a better life, because they believe that the people in the country they have emigrated are better off, just because they have heard that, then there will be problems. This is the reason why I am concerned.

Anyhow, with this article we end part one of our life stories articles; it will be followed by part two, my life in Australia, and part three general articles, aimed in talking about Italy, Australia and the rest of the world. Anyhow, there are other things that have changed since I have written this article. I will report them in the future.

My diary of June 2021.

WELCOME TO MENFRANCO GENERAL BLOG. Here, we will be posting posts about world issues,Australian issues, Italian issues, and my personal life story articles. Anyhow, today we will talk about,  what is happening in the world, and what I think about them.

In the month of June they have had this G 7 meeting, this photo above shows most of the G 7 leaders, who are meeting in the Cornish seaside resort of Carbis Bay England. this sounds more like they are having a holiday that do some work. Anyhow let us hope that they agree to do something good.

From my article, World News and My Views, June 2021.

Welcome to my blog, My diary of June 2021.

Dear readers, I am writing this article, because I am writing a diary that will help me remember what has happened in the past, I will be writing on many issues, we will start with the G7 meeting, that has been reported thus, and I quote.

The G7 group of nations are meeting in the Cornish seaside resort of Carbis Bay from Friday for what will be the 47th summit.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is hosting the event, but what is the G7, who is heading to the summit and what is likely to be up for discussion?

The G7, also known as the Group of Seven, is an international organisation made up of the world's seven largest advanced economies: Germany, Italy, Canada, France, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

The member country holding the G7 presidency, currently the UK, is responsible for organising and hosting the year's annual summit. Each member nation takes over the presidency for a year on a rolling basis.

The leaders of the G7 countries ended a three-day summit with a diverse set of initiatives, including a pledge to vaccinate poorer countries against the coronavirus, with one billion vaccine doses.

The G7 made ambitious promises, such as sharing vaccine doses with less well-off nations that urgently need them. UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who held a press conference at the conclusion of the summit, said the group would pledge at least 1 billion doses, with half of that coming from the US and 100 million from Britain.

(End of my quotes).

Anyhow, every time they have these meetings, we hope that they solve most of the present problems, but most times it does not happen that way, therefore, I know that they have promised these things, that can influence the entire world the right way, so, now I hope they keep their promises.

Anyhow, the three leaders that interest us most, from the Australian point of view since we are writing from Australia. are the prime minister of Australia Scott Morrison , the American President Joe Biden, and Boris Jonson.

About the COVID19 and others

Anyhow, part of this article will be mostly what is happening in Australia, because I am in Australia. Now let me explain, while I would like to keep my diary for the entire world, I have realized that I will write mostly about Australian events, USA events and Italian events.

Now, at the beginning of this month of June 2021, there are not major things happening. On the news there is the COVID19 to talk about, and people are talking about the immunization programs, which are progressing in different ways, some countries are doing better that the others. Of course, the countries that have immunized most have gained some control of this disease, but it is not easy to tell, since there is no proper way of telling, how many have been immunized and how many people are getting sick, so, we still must wait and see.

Anyhow, we want to believe that the worst of the pandemic is over, but suddenly we realize that it is not so, the state of Victoria and Melbourne is having problems again with the COVID19, because out of nowhere some people are testing positive, they are worried about this new type of virus. They are talking about a type of virus called Delta, there are lock-down again, and people are not happy, but so far there are no extremely sick people or dead people, but they are just worried.

Suddenly, some people from Victoria have come to Queensland, so, now we are also worried here, I hope this disease will stop soon, because it makes us worry too much. Of course, there is the immunization that we can use, but some people do not want to be immunized, because of the reaction it can have, there have been cases that people have died from it. So, not everybody is willing to be immunized. Anyhow, this immunization program is going to continue for a long time; but whether everybody will be immunized we do not know.

Various other world news

While I have started writing this article, it is the seventh of June, and the only good news today is that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry now have a daughter, this may start the healing process, with the royal family, I hope it does.

*     Some people view about the American President Joe Biden, and I quote.

Sky News host Alan Jones says allowing US President Joe Biden near a press conference is "elder abuse" and the media almost universally not calling out this "embarrassment" is a reflection on them.

The remarks come following the president confusing Syria and Libya in a press conference at the G7 summit.

"Why anyone would listen to Biden, I have no idea. Why anyone would let him near a press conference, I have no idea," Mr Jones said.

"This is elder abuse.

"Why the media almost universally refuse to say this is an embarrassment, reflects not only on Biden, but on the media.

"And the democrats in America are a disgrace to turn this bloke up as the leader of the western democracies."

End of quotes.

For me Joe Biden is an old man, but that does not mean that he cannot lead America for a few years.

Sporting notes.

History making Socceroos.

Australia made World Cup history by defeating Jordan 1-0 in a combative encounter in searing temperatures in Kuwait to notch an eighth successive win in the first phase of qualifying.

Italian soccer. In Italy they have had this match Italy versus Turkey, the Italian team won.

Tennis, Epic Djokovic comeback to win Roland Garros.

Novak Djokovic left the court to go the locker room for a little chat with himself after dropping the first two sets of the French Open final Sunday.

Aided by flawless serving down the stretch, a determined Djokovic summoned his imperious best and came all the way back to beat Tsitsipas 6-7 (6) 2-6 6-3 6-2 6-4 for his second championship at Roland Garros and 19th Grand Slam title overall — one away from the men's record shared by Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

Australia Rugby League

In Australia they have played the State of origin rugby league in Queensland, and everybody thought that the Queensland team was going to win, but as it turned out it was the N.S.W. team that won.

--------------------

Personal notes.

About the G7 meeting. Today we know that they have had this G7 meeting, and all went well. but at this moment I am worried about the climatic change. So, I must say that I am not aware how much they have talked about the climatic change and what can be done. This worries me a bit, because today I have seen on TV that in some places the temperature is going up.

You see, there are many violent storms and extreme temperature around the world that can be said, that they are caused by the climatic change, so, something needs to be done.

A note about Australian politics, after a few years, Barnaby Joyce is back as leader of the National Party. He is very outspoken and colourful politician, so, for me it is a good thing he is back. Politics sometime is boring and these people make it just a bit more interesting, it is a bit like when President Donald Trump was president, you see, you may not agree with what they are saying, but you still watch them just to see the way they do it.

Anyhow, I would have liked to have writing other things in my diary, but I should be happy with what I have done for this month.

See you next time.
