Genzano di Lucania history, as I know it.

WELCOME TO MENFRANCO GENERAL BLOG. Here, we will be posting posts about world issues,Australian issues and Italian issues. Anyhow today we will talk about, Genzano di Lucania history, since Genzano is the town that I come from. Taken from my Hub Pages life story articles.

This is one of the main street of the town, it is called the Corso. In this photo it seems deserted, but it is not like this all the time, because this is the place where Genzano,s people stroll up and down all dressed up, usually this happens on Sunday afternoon and feast days.

Genzano di Lucania history

Welcome to our article, Genzano di Lucania historyas I know it.

Dear readers, this is a long article as it is, so, in this blog we are only writing the text, to see the original article as it was published with about 12 photos and comments, click on this link, Genzano di Lucania history

Anyhow, this article is being written mainly for the people that come from Genzano di Lucania, since they know what we are going to talk about. Anyhow, today I want to write a few things about my native town of Genzano, and I am going to write it, just the way I remember it.

When I think about Genzano, the first things that come to my mind, is the way of life that we were living there, then I remember my school days and teacher (Ettore Lorito), because when I was at school in Genzano di Lucania, my teacher was writing a book about Genzano di Lucania. I wish I had this book with me to talk about Genzano, but I don’t. So, I am going to say only those things that I remember.

((Now, if you speak Italian, I can navigate you to the link of Ettore-Lorito writings about Genzano: Go to my blog, http://genzanoit.blogspot.com/, on the left there is a column with links, near the top is, Genzano in italiano (1) click on it, go down the page and click on Scrittori e poeti, click on Ettore Lorito, now that you are on Ettore Lorito site choose what you want to read.))

So, let us begin our story; how the town of Genzano came into existence, we don’t know, because today there are several versions how Genzano came into existence. Anyhow, we will start with what most people believe today, which is a folklore story that has been passed down from previous generations. Most people today believe that it was this queen of Monteserico that was the real founder of modern Genzano, but there are other stories as well, we are going to talk about this queen of Monteserico later.

Anyhow, there are other ancient stories that go around, one of these stories tells us that there was a youth called Yens, he was an excellent flute player, he fell in love with a princes called San who also fell in love with him; because they loved each other one day this princess San ran away from home and she joined Yens and Yens family, who were living in Genzano territory; very likely in the caves in the chasm below the future Genzano of today.

Knowing that this girl was a princess, Yens and his family decided to give her a better place to live in, so, they started to build something fit for a princess on the hill above the caves. This is how Genzano started the very first time and the name of Genzano is the name of the two lovers put together (Yens-San), anyhow, this is how I know this story. We believe that we have mentioned this in another article; The heritage chapter, of course, there are other stories as well, even if what we are going to say next may contradict what we have written above.

Some Genzano written history.

Now, let us see what else we can say about Genzano history; there is no certainty about the following, because the origins of places are hard to know, but what follow here is a compact history of Genzano di Lucania.

Some historians say that the Romans started Genzano town about the VI century BC when they had this ‘Pagus Gentianum settlement to control this part of their territories. Now let us talk about what a recent writer has discovered in the archive of Potenza; one of the first times that Genzano is mentioned in the archives is that of two brothers Secondo and Donato; in the year 258 AD, they were beheaded in Genzano ordered from council Valeriano, which I guess was a Roman council for that part of Italy.

Another one of the earliest and first written stories about Genzano, goes back to Roman times again, or about when the Roman Empire started to crumble.

The Western Roman Empirecollapsed in 476 as Romulus Augustus was forced to abdicate to the Germanic warlord Odoacer.

But even before the Roman Empire collapsed there is an event somewhere in the Roman history where they talk about a Genzano town, I assume that they are talking about Genzano di Lucania. This event has been mentioned in The heritage chapter. This seems to be the oldest written record found about Genzano history.

So, let us go back to talk about Genzano of today. As we want to keep this article compact, we jump several centuries. Next most important historic event is the Normans in Italy, this part of Italy was under the Normans control for a while and they ran most of their conquest from the castle of Monteserico, one of the Normans leaders was Roberto il Guiscardo; Anyhow after the Normans this part of the country passed several other owners, as it was used in the old system of feudality; this lasted until the year 1806 when the king of Naples Giuseppe Bonaparte, abrogated feudality.

There is a lot more that could be said, there are a couple of photos about Genzano the way we remember, and it is today, but if you want to know more about Genzano, click on the link below.

www.comune.genzano.pz.it/

There are many stories about Genzano; some of these stories we have written here-under.

-------------------

Saint Anthony protector of Genzano town.

As we know most towns in the world have a protector or patron. So, let us tell you about Genzano di Lucania protector. This story about Genzano protector; may well be after the time when the Roman Empire collapsed: And this story that we are telling you here is about St. Antonio Abate, who is still today the patron saint of Genzano, this story goes back to the fifth century AD or there about, Genzano town already existed then, as we have proof in the archive of Potenza that two martyrs were executed in Genzano in the year 258 AD.

Anyhow, there was a war going on at that time. The town of Genzano made resistance to the enemy aggression and its demands, so, it was put under siege. The enemy was furious and was going to destroy Genzano. They set their war machines ready for tomorrow to begin the assault of Genzano and destroy it. The town of Genzano was in grave danger, but that night the weather rained, snowed and became bitterly cold, it was so cold that froze everything stiff, so cold and frozen were the war machines that they could not be used or even moved, and the weather was cold for a long time afterward, until the enemy became tired and left; and that’s how Genzano was saved from destruction. The day that this event happened was on the 17th day of January, which is the day of St. Antonio Abate according to the Roman Catholic calendar. See what I found on the Internet about this great saint:

Anthony the Great or Antony the Great (c. 251–356), (CopticⲀⲃⲃⲁⲀⲛⲧⲱⲛⲓ), also known as Saint Anthony, Anthony the Abbot, Anthony of Egypt,Anthony of the Desert,Anthony the Anchorite, Abba Antonius (Ἀββᾶς Ἀντώνιος), andFather of All Monks, was a Christiansaint from Egypt, a prominent leader among the Desert Fathers. He is celebrated in many churches on his feast days: 30 January in the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Coptic Orthodox Church; 17 January in the Roman Catholic Church and the Coptic Catholic Church.

The biography of Anthony's life by Athanasius of Alexandria helped to spread the concept of monasticism, particularly in Western Europe through Latin translations.

Anthony is appealed to against infectious diseases, particularly skin diseases. "Saint Anthony's fire" has described different afflictions including ergotism, erysipelas and shingles.

End of Internet report about Saint Anthony.

Now that we have explained who was this great Saint Anthony, let us tell you how the story goes: The folks of Genzano believe that this incredible happening of cold weather was due to divine intervention through St. Antonio Abate: And this is the reason why St. Antonio Abate was made Patron Saint and protector of Genzano; this belief about Saint Anthony has lasted to the present time; so, even today when there is a problem in this town, let us say it has not rained for a long time, so, rain is needed for the fields to grow, the priest and the people soon take Sant’Antonio out in a procession through the town and into the country, in the hope that Sant’Antonio will help to make it rain. This is how the people of Genzano venerate this great Saint Anthony.

Now let us go back to Genzano history, for a very long time after this happening there is no written history about Genzano, therefore, nobody knows what happened. History seems to slowly restart at the beginning of the second millennium, see our next story. The Normans in Italy

-----------------------------------------------

The Normans in Italy

Genzano history, Menteserico castle, and the Normans as we understand it.

Now, let me start with a personal story, because this story explains things that I did not know before. Since I came to Australia, I have worked in the building industry where I met this Frenchmen called Luis, we knew each other well. Luis came to Australia when France left Algeria and the army of Algeria was dismantled, Luis was a captain in the army, so, he had learned many things including army history.

Anyhow, one day I was looking on the TV at the Tour of France, this stage was run in Normandy, so while I was looking at the country side I saw this castle in the background, which I could have sworn that it was exactly like the castle that I had seen thousands of times from my farm in southern Italy. So, next time when I met Luis, I told about this castle; and I had a surprise, because no sooner I mentioned the castle of Monteserico that Luis knew all about it, so, he explained to me.

The Normans have only built two castles one in France and another in southern Italy, and from this castle of Monteserico they dominated all their conquests of southern Italy. So, here is the proof that Luis gave me, which is that the castle of Monteserico has been built from the Normans; but I was wandering whether it could be true.

Luis story only shows us that this castle of Monteserico has been used from the Normans, because there are other stories about its origin; in fact there is even a story that this castle could have been built from a Roman family to run the surrounding countryside, or it might have been built as a monastery in the beginning of the Christian Era, and then went through several changes and owners that used it in different ways. It was built above caves where indigenous people used to live a very long time ago.

Anyhow the fact remains that the Norman had possessed the castle of Monteserico, because history shows us that in the X or XI century there indeed was a great battle around this castle won by the Norman, therefore, the Normans used this castle to dominate their conquests in southern Italy. To see more click on links below;

Normans - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Here we can add this link, about this castle of Monteserico and about Genzano history, it is a site created years ago from this Architect of Genzano, C. Pietrapertosa, (it is written in Italian)

Arch. Pietrapertosa - Storia e dintorni - Genzano di Lucania,

----------------------------------

Now let us talk about the modern Genzano. They started to rebuild the modern Genzano about the twelfth or the thirteen centuries. The folklore story says that in this castle of Monteserico that the Norman had used, this castle is about fifteen kilometres East-Southeast of Genzano. This is an old castle built or modified from the Norman’s  after the fall of the Roman Empire when they overrun Italy. They say that a long time ago there was a small town around the castle, but today there is no evidence of it and no real history when it ceased to exist. All we know, is that today near this castle there is a small chapel. Anyhow when the Norman domination came to an end, it was owned from other important people and one day there was this Spanish Princes called Aquilina Sancia, that one day would become the new founder of Genzano town, the people of Genzano feel grateful towards her, and most people that don’t know the entire history think that Aquilina Sancia is the founder of Genzano.

--------------------------------------------

Aquilina Sancia queen of Monteserico

The story and folklore of Genzano says that it was Aquilina Sancia, who happened to own the castle of Monteserico at the time when Genzano needed help to restart again. Anyhow, this princess in the early 14 century helped Genzano town restart. Aquilina Sancia some people say is a Spanish Princess, but she had to do something with the Sforza family and she was a queen. But, anyhow this castle of Monteserico at that time was owned by this rich and powerful family and queen named ‘Aquilina Sancia’ who lived in this castle, which is a solid coarse fortress built on a treeless roundish hill with extensive views of the countryside.

Anyhow, this Aquilina Sancia Queen of Monteserico, while she was living in this castle, she liked to travel in her stagecoach or on horseback between Monteserico castle and the new Genzano of those times, Genzano was then only a small town but she liked it, so, she helped it to become it a real town. The folklore story goes that she used a secret tunnel, or a secret way between these two places, because no one could understand how she could manage to travel without being seen, because, while she was thought to be in Monte-Serico castle, suddenly she would appear in Genzano without seeing her coming or going. She must have been very rich because it is said that, she hid a treasure that to these days has not been found, and the most valuable items consist of a ‘Gold Mother Hen with Chicks’ which has been hidden somewhere in Monte-Serico castle or in the secret tunnels or there about.

To me all those hidden riches and the large secret tunnel that she could run in with her stagecoach is folklore fantasy. But perhaps there was a small tunnel in Monte-serico castle and one in Genzano small castle that she turned into a monastery, this could allow her to come and go without being seen. In theory it was possible that she could drive her stagecoach in one of the caves in the chasm bellow the monastery, and from there through a small tunnel find the way into the monastery above. Therefore, there may be some truth about the tunnel story.

-----------------------------

How the modern Genzano came into being.

Even today the people believe that this queen of Monteserico, built a monastery where an old building was, this old building could have been the house of Yens and Princess San; anyhow because of this monastery the people in the country started moving back in the new town of Genzano, this is how the modern town of Genzano was found and she was loved from building this monastery. It is said that in her old age she moved in this monastery and died there. She wrote her will in the year 1327 before she passed away.

But let us tell the story as we see it; we can imagine that the people of those times loved this Queen, because of the good turn she gave the folks of the new Genzano; since we can say that she was the founder of the new Genzano, because she built the first church in Genzano called ‘L’Annunziata’ together with a rich monastery, the order of ‘The Sacred Nuns’ which has lasted up to 1905 the early part of the twentieth century. In those times, the building of the church and the monastery brought a change of life to those people that were living in the caves of the chasm and in the fields, because after building the church, they started to build more houses near their church and monastery, and slowly Genzano became a real town.

The reason why people left the caves and came to live into town is not clear, the reasons that they left the houses in the fields was there was malaria associated with this sort of living.

But in moving to town, they set a new way of life that would split the community in two, because the man folks had to stay put in the fields to look after their flocks, and whatever else they had to do to earn a living, either in the caves or in the working fields; while the rest of the community would live in town. So, from that time onward there were town’s people and country people belonging to the same town, which is a typical way of life of the rural towns of Southern Italy.

After the caves became partly empty, the inhabitant of the caves new that those caves were ideal to make wine, since they have a constant cool temperature throughout the year, therefore, the wine keep well for a long time, and since then they have made their wines in those caves.

Looking at the caves when I was young, you would be amazed to see when they make their wines, and indeed it is an interesting thing to see, if you happen to be there at the time when they harvest their grapes and make their wines. Because the chasm and its caves becomes alive in its own archaic ways, see our article, Wine making the old ways I think we have said enough in this article, so, I say see you in our next article, The town I came from. See you soon.

Genzano di Lucania, is my town.

WELCOME TO MENFRANCO GENERAL BLOG. Today we will talk about, Genzano di Lucania the town that I come from; from my Hub Pages life story articles.

This fountain is the oldest fountain in Genzano, this large trough in the foreground must be where the name of this fountain comes from, because it is used to water the horses (italian cavalli) so, Cavallina means the place where you water the horses, it was handy to water them when leaving or coming back to town. in the background there is also the fountain with several spout of water that the people used to drink and do the washing when there was no running water supply in town.

Welcome to our article, Genzano di Lucania

Dear readers, let me tell you about my native town of Genzano di Lucania, because I am writing my life story and my native town. Genzano is a town in Southern Italy and the town I came from. Anyhow, I hope that some readers that have emigrated themselves, like to read this article.

Now, allow me to explain the situation, since I am an Italian born and grew in this town of Genzano di Lucania, I suppose that most of my town people would have liked to see this article written in Italian; but that has not been possible to do for a couple of reasons, first because our computer programs are in English, therefore, it is hard to write in another language other than English, because the computer will mark those writing as being wrong.

The other reason is that the English language has a larger audience, and there are a lot of migrated Italians that speak English now. So, I have decided to write them in English, because it is easier for me; however, I am also writing a blog at, http://genzanoit.blogspot.com, there are a few pages written in Italian, in the page section and links that helps see other things about this town, including articles that have been written from native writers.

Now let me introduce myself, so that my countrymen know who I am, my name is, Francesco Menchise and I was born and lived in Genzano di Lucania when I was young, So, I want to salute all those who remember me, since I remember most of you even today; greetings and all the best to you all my friends. I must say that while I am writing this article, I wish I could see you once again even if it is for a short while, you see even today I feel homesick, well not really homesick, but I would like to be back there once again, just to see the people that I know.

Anyhow, there is a lot more to show you, than what I can write here in this blog, so, please click on this Hub Pages link to see the original article of, Genzano di Lucania.

Let us hope that these links work for our readers, anyhow there are other things that we want to show you starting with Genzano soccer field.

------------------------------------------------------

Genzano soccer field

In Italy one of the main sports that everybody follows is what we call here soccer, so, most towns have their soccer field. Genzano di Lucania has its own soccer field too, which the inhabitant would be proud to show you beside other things; but let us start to show you some photos, since the Italian people love soccer; as far as I remember Genzano has had a soccer team, and today they have a proper soccer field as well.

We need to say here that when I was a teenager there was not a real soccer field yet, anyone that was interested in soccer had to wait after the wheat harvest to get the soccer field going for that season. After the wheat harvest in a field at the outskirt of the town they would flatten the ground level enough to play for that season. It was okay, because in Southern Italy in summer is usually very dry, so, the soccer matches were on just the same, but there were times when a thunderstorm would come and ruin the sporting event. I remember this because it happened to me when I was young, we all had to run and find shelter wherever we could at the nearest houses in town, we got wet, but it was fun. This is how I remember these soccer matches and the old soccer fields.

Talking about old Genzano town photos

In this article there will be several photos that we will paste in when we find them. Anyhow, let me show you an aerial photo: This first photo here shows you the oldest part of Genzano, which is very ancient and there are a few stories how this town was started. So, in my later articles there will be a story or two written how this town was started from people living nearby, perhaps in caves or other make shift dwellings; today there are a few theories that have been written recently, from local writers and one of these writers in this link, Scrittori e poeti, this link is for those that can read Italian as they are written in Italian, if the link works click on the writer Ettore Lorito he has written perhaps the real story about Genzano origin and why this town was called Genzano, so, my own explanation here-under may or may not be correct, however it is my point of view.

About Genzano and about me.

Anyhow, as I have said, my name is Francesco Menchise born and grown in Genzano di Lucania and I migrated to Australia a long time ago, but I have never forgotten my original home town of Genzano, therefore, now I am writing the memories of my life and my home town.

In my life memories I will be writing several things about Genzano whenever the occasion arises, I will be writing all those hearsay and stories that went around town while I lived in Genzano when I was young. I am going to write about the most important events that happen in Genzano like this feast, (festa della Madonna) See photos. What I am going to say here can surprise even a modern Genzano person since things have changed a lot in the last 50 years or so, therefore, don’t be surprised if you learn something from me about my original hometown of Genzano di Lucania in these articles.

Homesick and some other stuff

We who migrated from our native hometowns, we will always feel home sick, so, we remember all those things that we have left behind, therefore, in Genzano there are good things to remember; but  I had to leave all those things behind when I migrated to Australia, anyhow I still keep them in my mind even today.

Now that I have talked to you about my native town of Genzano, let me tell you a bit more about myself and what I am going to write in Hub Pages articles, you see I have already published a few articles, where I am writing about my memories and other things as well; please click on the links below to view and read our articles:

Farming today compared to harvest in the fifties.

WELCOME TO MENFRANCO GENERAL BLOG. Today we will talk about, Farming today compared to the old way, part one, from my Hub Pages life story articles.

This is a horse drawn harvester machine, that is like the one we were using when I was young. It would cut the wheat or whatever you were harvesting, and make tied bundle that we would collect in hips, and later take them to our farm to thresh and collect our wheat.

This photo shows how how we worked the fields before the tractor came out. In those times it was not easy, since the farmers had to feed all those animals to work the fields, and also needed many people to do that, so, everything would cost more.

Compare wheat harvest in the fifties.

The following description is the way of wheat harvest time in the fifties. When I was young we had already a horse drawn harvester that was helping us, this early harvester was able to cut the wheat plants and tie them in bundles, so, we were already halfway down the track of progress, as this machine saved us a lot of work, because we did not have to harvest by hand, which is a very labor intensive job, as we are going to describe later in this article. Anyhow, at this time of the year everybody in the farm works hard and for very long hours, it is very hot and everything is very dry. We get up very early in the morning, we get the horses ready for working by feeding them and watering them, then we harness the horses and set them to pull the harvester, and off we go in the fields for another day of hard work, if everything goes well, we might be able to go over a ten-acre field just in one day with this harvester. The harvester needs two people to get it working, one drives the horses and another regulate the harvester, the harvester goes around the field and leaves these bundles of wheat or other cereal, whatever has been sown in the field. Now these bundles of wheat will be collected in hips around the field from other people as soon as possible, the hips of these bundles of wheat are made is such a way that if it rains the rain would run off easily, these hips of wheat will be collected later when we finish with the harvester, perhaps in a week or two, then we will go back to the fields with a cart to take everything on a special plot near the farmhouse, where the threshing machine will be hired and set.

When we collect and cart everything to the farm house, we work very long days, we get up before 4 am, but we have a break of two or three hours at lunchtime because it is too hot to do anything, then we go back to work and between real work and looking after the animals we finish at dusk around 8 pm, after that we only have to feed the horses: this sort of work goes on for more than a month and sometimes up to two months, with no breaks at all seven days a week. Everybody in the farm works to their maximum and they are very tired, they are also very worried about the possible fire hazard, and also of any thunder storms at this time of the year, since anyone of these happenings can destroy the whole crop, and a whole year of hard work can go up in smoke. So, we are all working hard, and at the same time we are praying God and waiting for the threshing machine to come and finish our harvest.

When some farmer did not have a lot of wheat to thrash, they could use a place in common with other farmers, so that, the thrashing machine would not have to be set several times. The thrashing machine that were around and we would hire together with other farmers came with a large crew, because it was a very large machine, bigger than the one shown in this article, it had a crew of about twenty people, it was a very interesting time when we were thrashing our own wheat, oats, barley, etc. Because we were anxious to see how much wheat and other product we had made.

Now there were many other things that I could tell you, but I better not, to make this story short. Anyhow, here I want to say that when one goes through these life experiences in the farm, one knows that farming life is hard; but since this is the only way to grow food to feed ourselves, we the farmers keep working in our farms to feed ourselves and the rest of the community.

So, we the farmers feel that it would be right if the rest of the community appreciates our efforts, so, they should be thanking us for all the hard work that we have done, after all, we are providing all those things that are necessary to make food for the rest of the community; but it does not happen that way, because even when we are working our guts out, and while we are doing that we are becoming dull, the rest of the community does not care and they label us as dull people; their attitude hurts us very much and we believe that we don’t deserve that; just because we are farm people, but we have done our part of hard work for our own benefit and for the benefit of the entire community. So, we the farmers feel hurt to say the least.

This is how life was then in the small farms of Southern Italy. Anyhow, this town people attitude as I have said above, plus some very lean years when we hardly could survive, and because we had only a small farm and it would have been hard to expand was one of the reasons why I left farming and migrated to Australia. But anyhow let us continue to describe how harvesting was done the very old way, so, that we can compare it to today’s living.

------------------------------------------------

Harvesting the very old way

Now, before we finish this article, we want to compare the very old ways of farming with today farming, we need to say how harvesting wheat was done before my times; here we need to say that I have witnessed the last part of this old practice when I was young. You see, when I was young we were already using a horse drawn harvester, and it was very helpful; but there were people that had some small holdings and we had one of these ourselves, it was in a place, where it was hard to go with the harvester that we had, so, we had to use the old ways for harvesting our wheat for that small wheat field, because that was the only way to do it for one reason or another.

So, let me describe how harvesting was done in those old bygone days; at harvesting time strange as it may seem today, we could hire some specialized people that were good at using the sickle, these people usually went from town to town to do this seasonal harvesting job; we need also to explain that in Southern Italy because the terrain has different altitude the wheat reaches maturity at different times, this was helping these seasonal workers to have a longer span of work, now just to compare those very hard times with today times, I have to tell you that these workers were sleeping anywhere they could on a sack filled up with straws under a shelter if they could find one, as they could not afford anything else. In the morning they would get up early and wait in the town square hoping that somebody would hire them for the day.

In the old time, to harvest the wheat and other cereal a lot of people were needed, it was like what this old man is doing, you needed to cut the wheat with a sickle, and when you had a handful tie it up, put it on the ground carefully, then repeat it again and again, until you had enough handful to make a bundle, and so on.

Now let us say that we had a small plot about one acre and we could not use the harvester, because it was not possible to go there, we would hire four people and form a gang that could harvest one acre in one day and collect it in hips, that later would be taken on a cart to the farm house to be threshed one way or another.

In the old times anything that had grown in the field was collected, it needed to be collected for the people to survive, because the fields did not produce as much as they do today, because they could not be cultivated with our modern machines. You see, today we have the tractor to cultivate the fields and it does a better job than the horse drawn plough, we have many types of fertilizer to help us grow more wheat but let us go back to talk about very old harvesting times.

Wheat harvesting and threshing the very old time

Now I must say briefly how the older generations before my times used to thresh their harvests, to collect their produce. Now, let us suppose that it was a few bundles of wheat to be threshed one could even extract the wheat by hitting them with a stick, but let us say that we had a cart full, or many cart full for that matter, then we had to use a different method, which is the way that most farm used in the very old times for centuries, before the threshing machine was invented, so, let me tell you how it was done.

I happen to know this procedure, because in the farms when I was young, we were still using this method with smaller crops, most likely broad beans, lentils, chickpeas, linseed, and other farm produce that were not meant to go through the wheat threshing machine. When we were doing this procedure of threshing these minor crops, the elder would always be telling us that this was the way that they used to collect their wheat as well and usually it took them a few months to collect all the season produce. So, now let me describe this to you, so that we can compare the difference.

In order to do this old threshing, first of all we needed to prepare a piece of ground that is very solid and smooth, this can be achieved by stripping the old dry grass on a piece of land that had a large clay content, then wet it with a little bit of water to make it compact; once that was ready we would place our wheat or whatever was to be threshed and collected on this clean ground, then we would get our horses mule and donkeys whatever animals were available and drive them around and around until everything was threshed. Of course there was a lot more to say, but let us make it short otherwise it would be boring.

Now, once the threshing was done we had to separate the produce from the straw and any other foreign matter, this was achieved by removing the straws from the top layer making sure that no produce was left with the straws, at the same time we would collect the bottom layer in a hip, once that was done we would have to clean that produce by using the wind, to take away the finer parts that were still mixed with the wheat or whatever it was, and there were many other things that we could use to get this wheat clean, by the end of the day we could have collected two or three hundred kilograms of produce, and when we did that we thought that we had done well for a day work.

In the very ancient times was even worse, see what they were using in the Medieval Times, here is a link to check out some ancient farm tools including the Flail and Winnowing Basket used to collect and clean wheat.

I hope that this gives the modern reader a view of how thing were done in the old times, so, I do not want to say much more about how all this threshing and cleaning of the wheat was done, because even writing about it is boring today, but anyhow it needed to be done in those days, because that was the only way to collect our wheat to make bread and other things to eat. Now, my dear reader’s do you see how hard was then even to collect wheat for ourselves, so that we could make bread and other cereal product.

I hope I have been able to write something that really sets up the great difference of the ways of life that we were living then and the ways of life that we are living now, for this I want you to compare and judge for yourself how much better off we are today.

To the young people who think that today life is hard, let me describe to you what I have witnessed when I was young, because then life really was harder than today, you see those days everybody had to find how to earn enough to feed themselves there were no handover from the government. So, the very poor people of those days were trying to collect anything they could to feed themselves, as I have witnessed these things myself, so, let me describe this to you:

You see, at harvest time this is what I have witnessed, I have seen old and poor people mainly old ladies go around the fields and pick up any ear of wheat that was left behind in the fields, one ear of wheat here and another ear wheat there until they had the strength to go around, they did this each day until harvest time was over and there was nothing else to collect; and I tell you what these poor people were happy if in the end they had collected enough ears of wheat that they could thresh and clean themselves, perhaps they could have collected enough to make 50 to 100 kilos of wheat during harvest time and they were happy because, they could make bread from this wheat and not go hungry for a few months.

Now I hope that you can see what I mean when I say that the youths of today don’t know anything about hard times?

Anyhow, I hope that today this abundance of cheap food lasts for a long time, because things can change in the future. Today the climatic change is the worrying part, because we don’t know how much it is going to affect the farms and our lives.
