The great man
John Howard enters Qld election campaign
-
I say here that a great man backs up another would be great man
Report on the Google news;
Campbell Newman will win Ashgrove and questions about the Liberal National Party (LNP) leadership are academic, former prime minister John Howard says.
Mr Howard joined the LNP leader on the hustings on Thursday, in the seat he must win to claim Queensland's top job.
Mr Howard backed Mr Newman's claim that if he can't win Ashgrove, the LNP can't win government. 'He's going to win Ashgrove. His political courage will be rewarded and that's what makes it academic,' he told reporters.
Mr Newman has refused to say who'll be premier if the LNP wins the March 24 election but he fails in Ashgrove.
Polls currently have him trailing Labor incumbent Kate Jones and he needs a 7.1 per cent swing to win the seat - well beyond the 4.6 per cent uniform swing the LNP needs to win power.
Mr Howard joked about being trotted out to aid Mr Newman's campaign nine days out from polling day. 'If they want to drag you out and pull you to the colours for a day or two, well you know, I'll very reluctantly have my arm twisted,' he laughingly told reporters.
He said Mr Newman would make a great premier and had shown his tenacity by running in Ashgrove.
'The thing I admire about him most is that he's taken on a tough seat,' Mr Howard said.
'It shows a level of personal commitment that he
would put his own personal political future on the line for the sake of deliveringa better Queensland.
'I believe fair minded Queenslanders will reward that courage.'
Mr Howard said Labor's attacks on Mr Newman's integrity were unfair but typical of what happened in election campaigns.
'People always throw mud and you throw more when you are more desperate,' he said, saying Labor should stop playing the man and start playing the ball.
Mr Newman said Mr Howard was his hero and gushed that his parents had both served in his ministry.
Both men made speeches to the party faithful gathered at the St Peter Chanel School in the electorate.
One local woman said polls suggesting Mr Newman would lose Ashgrove are wrong.
'The Labor people make a lot of noise but there is a silent majority for Campbell,' she told AAP.
Mr Newman announced three minor policies onThursday.
They included a commitment to pay government bills worth less than $1 million to small businesses within 30 days, or interest would be paid.
He also announced $3 million over four years for research and development in the agriculture and horticulture sector, and another $3.5 million to encourage young people to get into agriculture.
Mr Newman and Mr Howard are attending the LNP's lunchtime QForum event.
